No, I'm not even kidding. My mom has done this for years. It just makes sense. I'm personally a little hesitant to nuke (wait for it...) sponges as I like my microwave to be free from superheated plastic goo gases. The researcher is reported saying:

The microwave is a very powerful and an inexpensive tool for sterilization.

That's right. For some reason it's surprising that the same device used to sterilize toothbrushes and superheat water (neat a video!) can kill bacteria in the common household sponge.
